Whitehaven 20/04/2006 - Joe Shimmin |
I had a look in the cliff section at whitehaven. It's not too hard to find as all of the other rocks in the section seem to be sandstones, so when you see shale, you're in the right place. Plenty of pieces of plant can be found easily in the scree, and blocks can be broken up as well. To find all of these plant fossils was great, but one problem I had was that the shale is not in continuous sheets - at least not at the surface, and so many larger plant pieces are broken into many pieces. It's pretty hard to find a whole, nice plant or a decent piece of one and the "Your fossil finds" pics show the best that I found over 2 trips which lasted about 2 hours each. Still, a very interesting location to visit for a Kentish fossil hunter who's used to Cretaceous and younger. |
